I made it to Sturgis 2012 from Texas

I made it to Sturgis 2012 from Texas

Well, I've been riding for over 6 years now on my own and over 35+ years with my hubby, and I finally went down on August 6, 2012. It is never if but when you go down. It was more embarrassing that anything.
First my hubby and I decided to travel on our bikes up to Sturgis, SD from Texas. We made the 1370 miles up there and had a wonderful trip together. He on his streetglide and me on my "Queeny" Roadking! It took us 3 days of riding to get there. We were invited to come up and stay at SugarBear's camp.(SugarBear Chopper out of LA)as he was there to unveil the Paul Sr's bike with the Sugarbear frontend (will debut in November on American Choppers).
Anyway on Sunday we rode with SugarBear and Lichtner on their ride and had no problems. On Monday a group of us decided to ride over to Custer Park, and Mt. Rushmore. After we toured Crazy Horse we decided to travel down Hwy 87 on our route to Mt. Rushmore. About 6-7 miles down this hwy was a 10mph curve that took me down. First my floorboard scraped and I over corrected and went off the right shoulder where the dirt was soft and took my Queeny down along with me. My leg swelled immediately, but I was able to stand and walk. My Queeny had a bent front fender and a few scrapes on the tank, and a broken windshield. It was either crawl back on my Queeny and ride again or wait hours for a tow truck, so I did the inevitable and crawled back on her and rode about 30 miles over toward Mt.Rushmore. I made it about 4 miles from there and my leg was numb to the point I could no longer shift. So I pulled into the rangers station and my hubby borrowed a friends bike with a back seat and put me on it and left my Queeny all alone at the rangers station. He then rode me to the nearest hospital (Rapid City) maybe 40 miles or so. I was taken in at the ER and xrayed my leg, elbow and shoulder. NO broken bones! But I had a very deep contusion on my thigh. SugarBear came over in Fuji's rental car from the Broken Spoke Campground to pick me up and some great friends went back for my Queeny. It is now October 3rd and My thigh is still slightly bruised and I have started therapy on it. Needless to say I stayed at the camp the rest of the trip in the RV. And our friend rode his bike back home so that I could ride in the RV with my Queeny in the trailer.
Even after this crazy experience I'm am so ready to get back on my Queeny and get my wind therapy too! I plan on going back to Sturgis next year and finish my journey!

back to riding
by: Sassy2731

Well, I've not been on this forum for sometime now. Had lots of things to do over the winter here in Texas. First off I did ride to the Lone Star Rally this year on my fatboy Chromey. Made the trip down and back home on her. Then finished recouping over the winter months and trying to get myself in shape for the springtime riding season. Well a couple of Sunday's back (St Patrick's Day) I got the courage up to crawl back on my Queeny (roadking) for a ride with some friends. First time back on her after my accident in Sturgis. Was a bit anxious but once I took off it was just like old times. So ready for more riding now. Believe it or not I still have a couple of bruises and some tenderness from my accident back on August 6th, 2012 in Custer Park. But I am ready to ride again.. I was really in need of my wind therapy! Now I'm ready for more! :-)

I did it today!
by: Sassy2731

My first ride since my crash in Sturgis! I rode my fatboy "Chromey" today for a short ride! I never imagined just how much you use your thigh muscles to just shift your bike until today! Sort of made my leg sore but with more exercise and riding I'll be able to make my goal to ride the hour ride to Galveston for the Lone Star Rally Nov. 1st.

keep on going
by: Lynn

That's the spirit. 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.' Glad to hear there were no broken bones.

Thanks!
by: Sassy2731

Thank you for the well wishes. I'm thinking the weather is really nice this weekend so I may get my Fatboy"Chromey" out and give her a ride in the wind. My doctor said this week that I was healing good and he didn't think I should have a problem. I just need to take short trips at first. I have to be ready for Nov.1st for the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, TX. At least the ride there is only about an hour from our home. I'm sure I won't have a problem. If any of you go to LSR this year watch from me on one of my purple bikes and give us a wave or come over and introduce yourself to me and let me know you read my story! :-) I'll be glad to talk with you!

Your fall
by: Katie

Thank you so much for sharing your story. We all need to hear stories like yours. I have a year under my belt and have dropped my bike 3 times. DAMN I was upset I thought should I continue etc. I have a friend who says I have never dropped my bike WHATEVER! I put over 7000 k's this year and will still put some more on before the snow flies. I am still riding and will continue to do so as I love it. Everytime I fell I was really slow riding and to the right! I have taken more lessons and will keep on going. Hubby dropped his bike for the first time this year and he has ridden longer. He said EVERYONE drops their bike! I agree. I am so glad that you are okay.

Thanks for sharing

Two kind of Rider
by: Lana

There are two kinds of riders.....those that have crashed and those that will. So glad I got mine out of the way and hoping you get back to riding soon.
