Yamaha 650 v star or Suzuki S40

by Debbie
(Springfield, Mo)

First off I have to say I love this site. I have learned alot about riding. I have been riding a Yamaha vstar 250 & ready for something a little bigger. I am torn between the vstar 650 & the S40. I love the looks of the vstar but im concerned about the weight of it when I park it & turning at slow speeds. That is why I have been looking at the S40. Its lighter but I don't like the looks as well & it's doesn't have a couple of features I like such as the trip odomiter. My local Suzuki dealer has a brand new 2011 for $4,500 & no interest for 5 years which kinda sweetens the deal on it. I just want to get the one I will be the most happy with.

2 2008 Vstar 650's available in Marlboro NJ

These are great bikes. We loved riding them and I started on the Virago 250 and moved up to the 650 to ride a heavy bike. Definitely helps with stability and wind. We have both up for sale now since we moved on to a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and hubby has a Triumph America. Give a call and I'll send pics and discuss price. $4k each or both for $7k.

VStar

I got my license last July and my first bike is the VStar650. I love my bike. I am only 5' so it's seat height is perfect as my feet touch the ground. It handles very nicely. My vote is the VStar.

Go for the v star
by: Rene L

My first bike was a brand new S40. I decided to get it because I was a new rider and was worried about getting a heavier bike. The bike was a huge headache. Within the first 600 miles the bike had 3 strange mechanical breakdowns and repairs. It got to be that I was nervous about riding it because I was worried about breaking down on the road again.

I finally got fed up and upgraded to a C50T which is a 833 and heavier. What a wonderful difference. I was surprised to find that the heavier bike was actually much more stable had less vibration and was easier to handle. Also the brakes are far more superior than those on the S40 an important safety feature. Finally, I love that the bike has a windshield, comfortable footboards and saddle bags, none of which the S40 had.

So by now you probably get that I vote for the V Star! Good luck with your decision.

Another vote for the 650 V Star

I too started on a 2001 V-star 650. It was purple and I loved it. I now ride a Harley Sportster SuperLow. The 650 is a great bike for new riders.

V-Star!!!

I started on a Yamaha V-Star 650 Custom and I loved it. I am on a 950 now. Nice, comfy low seat height; light and easy to control. A cruiser with a sporty response - I know you will love it.

S40 vs V-Star
by: Patti

I started with the S40 and am now riding an '08 1100 V-Star (bought it real cheap brand new last year. While the S40 is much lighter, I found that it felt a little top heavy compared to my V-Star, which clearly outweighs it by nearly 300lbs. The V-Star is much more stable because of the weight and lower center of gravity, which I feel is very well distributed. It really didn't take long to get used to the added weight, even less time to feel comfortable on it, which was almost immediate I might add. The heavier bike will also feel more stable at higher speeds. Though I loved my S40, I think I would recommend the V-Star.

Yamaha or Suzuki???
by: Anonymous

I would go with the Yamaha. I started out on the VStar 650 and it was wonderful. When I decided to step up...I got a Suzuki C50T. I have not been able to sell that bike at all!!! My husband sold his Yamaha and had it sold the day we put it on Craig's list. I now ride a Yamaha 950T and he has a Yamaha Roadliner. I STILL have the Suzuki for sale!!!!!

650 v Star

I started out with a 650 v star and within a year upgraded to a Kawasaski 900 Vulcan. I wanted something bigger. Have you thought about a Yamaha Stryker? Nice bikes!

V-Star
by: Laura

I have an '03 V-Star 650. It is my starter bike and I think it's perfect for me. It's low enough to plant my feet comfortably on the ground. It's not too big, or too heavy, and I feel like I can control it very well when I'm riding. I don't have much to compare it to but am VERY happy with it.
