What's the purpose of a neoprene face mask?

I've looked all over the internet and can't seem to find out why so many motorcycle shops sell these. Are the intended to be used with half helmets? They seem pretty pointless with a full helmet. The reason I ask is because I'm a new rider and I want to make sure I have all the gear I need for inclement weather and traveling long distances. Thanks!

Love my face mask

I love my neoprine face mask. It allowes me to ride in cooler weather, where as if I didn't have it I wouldn't get to ride as long. Plus it looks cool too.

Face mask

Yes, the face mask helps when wearing a shorty helmet or where there is no helmet law. I went riding a couple days ago (March 6th), it was 50 degrees but the air temp was much colder so wearing my face mask made a big difference.

How cold is cold?

When it's warm, there's a lovely air flow that comes up under the full face helmet. Fresh. Enjoy the lilacs, the strawberries, the pasture. OK, maybe not so much the pasture.

When it's cold, and you just can't stand another day without a ride, the air still comes up under the helmet. And your chin gets cold. Until it hurts. Because it's the almost-warm darn day you get to have a ride, dammit, and you're not ready to go back yet!

By the way, the definition of "cold day" or "warm enough to ride" changes as the winter progresses and desperation sets in.
