UPgrading from a 250 to an 883

by Tracie
(Petersburg, IL )

HI,
Im a 2nd year motorcycle rider and 2 nights ago I traded in my Suzuki 250 for an HD 883 Custom… tonight will be my first night to ride it. Im nervous, scared, overwhelmed yet very excited. The main reason I upgraded is my fiancé and I would like to be able to take longer road trips (not feasible or comfortable on a 250 ) and when I ride to work, I struggle with wind & semi’s on my 250.. so tonight Im taking the official plunge to learn to ride my “big girl” bike… any advice??

keep up with your dreams...
by: lilmsrida

If you want it, it will get easier. If you feel comfortable go out, if you don't then wait.....I knew when I was ready to just go get dressed....and no matter what anyone says only you can do it. Your dreams are your passion....keep positive smile and you will feel the excitement of riding!! I get nervous right before I take off as being a new rider this year (2012) on my new '12 Iron. And my husband doesn't even ride! I just get dressed and go...I feel fine once I pull out into the street and "own" my side of the road. I don't care if they are looking at me...I am riding!!! woot woot lol....just keep up the passion and ride your heart out! I have to admit I fell once doing a slow turn right by my driveway but hit the front brake and now only use only on my stops with both brakes. The bike is learning that I am the boss and I plan on owning that "dark one". Always live by the more you get out the more you learn...always keep your eyes and ears open .....and I let know "cages" push me lol

Success!!!

Tonight was good!!! We live near New Salem Park in central Illinois and its the perfect spot to learn to ride (or get aquainted with a new bike) There are 2 parking lots at the top & bottom of a hill with a windy raod in between... I did some laps between the 2. The power is WAY different than my 250 but no big issues!! It will take me some time before I feel street ready, but I think in a few more park trips I'll be good!! The bike is bigger & heavier but feels more stable, it was time to make the switck and I think with a little bit of practice, I'll feel ready to get out there! I even named her... Lucy :)

You will be fine

I started riding on a HD Sportster 48 with a 1200cc engine so you will be fine if you just take your time and get used to it. It scared me a little at first, and I'm only 5'1" so it's fun to see people's faces when they realize it's a little girl ridin' that big ole Harley.. :)

Upgrade will be fine

I rode a Ninja 250 for about a year before trading up to my HD Sportster 883 for the same reason you did....wanted to take longer overnight trips with my husband. You will learn to love the Sporty in no time at all! Take it on a couple of short rides to get the feel of it and don't let it intimidate you. You can handle her!!!! I kept my 883 for 5 years, and just two months ago traded her for a Dyna Super Glide Custom....so we can go cross country now!!!

I am also a 2nd year rider but started with a 650 to a 750. The 883 is a good size bike but as long as you can keep it balanced you are good to go. Take your time and get comfortable. Good luck and ride safe :)
