Two Bikes at a Stop Sign

by Lani
(Allegan, MI)

Recently, my husband and I took the bikes to run errands in the city. We don't ride together as often as we'd like. I rode behind and found that no one knew what to do at four way stops. He would drive through and the cars to the left and right would sit there staring at me. I would finally go through and catch up in frustration. At least a half dozen stops created different levels of confusion and frustration. Speaking about it later, my husband says he experienced similar confusion when I am in the lead. If we sit together at a stop, should we leave the stop together? Or do the normal one vehicle at a time rules apply?

Together...

When my hubby and I ride together, we also pull up next to each other at stops. Our thing is, the left always leads and we go through four-way stops together. Apparently the cagers around here expect this. I guess together we make a car. :) We have never had any problems with that. However, we pretty much leave at the same time, with only a little lead time for the person to the left, so it doesn't give cars any chance to THINK we are going one at a time.

Stop Sign

When riding with my husband, we pull up to the stop sign side by side and go thru at the same time. Don't know if that is proper or not but it works for us.

I am from Alberta, Canada and the proper way here for stop signs is to go through one at a time (just like if you were traveling in a car) A motorcycle is a motor vehicle and therefore should follow the same rules in this instance as for cars, you need to control your own space as a motorcycle rider and cagers (people in cars) need to respect that! Of course for safely reasons, one should assume that they don't!

Two Bikes at Once
by: Jenny

To be honest, I don't know what the law is, but I'd assume that the two bikes would both go at the same time during a four-way or three-way stop. In general, the two bikes pull up together at a stop sign and leave separately. However, a four-way or a three-way stop assumes that everybody's going to be watching. When vehicles at the other stops are all waiting for their turn in the queue, the two bikes are together at the stop, so they'll assume they're leaving together. When my husband and I are in that situation, we would both leave the four-way stop together at the same time and then get in separate lines after we're just about through the intersection.

Stop Sign

If my husband and I are sitting close together at the stop sign, I try to go with him as one. Otherwise it seems like someone gets between us and I have a hard time catching up with him. I don't know if that is right or not, but it works for me.

Good Question!
by: Cheryl

Have you checked your state's motorcycle rules or taken the Motorcycle Safety Course? I go next week for mine and will ask about that. I'm in North Dakota, so the answer might not be the same for you.
