Simple Braids then Shake it Wild! Messy Hair is Sexy

by Jackeh
(San Francisco, CA)

Hey, I'm a new Rider and happen to be a hair stylist. I usually get super tangles since my hair is long, so I usually braid it in 2 or a low loose ponytail, it creates great waves and brushing hair back before putting helmet on usually makes for less goofiness and a hard flat part.

I am very interested in ideas of what to do with my hair while riding.

I also would like to say that the woman who had such a problem with the topic could have just as easily not read it to begin with. No one asked her opinion anyway, they were asking for tips on dealing with their hair.

Hair

I admit it I want to look good. For me! For my confidence level. More importantly though I find that when I ride my hair blows all in my face and in my mouth. That is not safe and it's just gross. My hair is long with a bunch of layers and when I pull it back not all of it stays due to the layers. I find that if I use barrettes to pull my bangs back on the top of my head and then put it in a ponytail and braid the ponytail at least I can somewhat control the flyaway hair. Not the look I was going for but at least it keeps it out of my eyes so that I can see. And I also wear a helmet of course.

Helmet Hair

I went on a long ride today and found that when I put my hair in a bun it restricted my head and felt like it was pulling my hair, but when I pulled it down it felt much better. At our deatination it looked fuller then normal and not so messed up.

I like this forum, not the bullshit.

Actually if someone would ever present it in such a manner that it was related to us being professionals, then that would be a different thing. When this issue is brought up, ad nauseum I might add, it is always with a comment about how "sexy" it is or how "men love it" just like it was here. I highly suspect when I see particular items mentioned, complete with links to a website to purchase it (big shocker) that its more about advertising and spam and certainly NEVER about looking for a job interview or work.

I think alot of us are tired of this, I know the original gal is and I certainly know I am.

Good lord shut up already!

Looking good...
by: Nicole

Ok, I found this site a little while ago and was very interested in the helmet hair section... Unfortunately I also saw the flame wars start just because of appearances and a desire to look good. Here is a thought...

Not all of the women on this forum are trying to look good for guys... Surprise!!! What I see is a lot of women, daily riders not weekend road warriors, who want or need to look presentable at their destination. How would you like to walk into your doctors, lawyers, child's classroom, or other place that any of us work to support our riding habit, and see the woman with matted, sweaty, tattered hair? Is that going to instill faith in you that this woman can do a good job? Many of us need to present professional, maintained appearances, or yes, just want to look nice. If that is not for you, that's fine, we respect that, but please also respect the right of others to discuss ways of keeping that image, after all, that is why it is a separate forum.

Simple Braids?
by: RaciBabi

Simple braids would be fine- except my hair is waist length and I don't like them to wack me in the face. I also don't like that -as I am getting older and my hair is thinning-to lose more to the helmet cutting my hair as I ride. I really don't look good with short hair- or else I would of chopped it off long ago.

I agree with the previous comment. But at least we get to ride. If we want to look good and She doesn't care how she looks, then so be it. To each his own, let's move on now.

HUH? I agree with the one person that says it really doesn't matter if you are confident in yourself and just want to ride but what does this mean?

"I think the woman who doesn't care to look good for men must be out to attract the opposite sex. If you look good you'll feel good and if you feel good you'll ride great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I agree with if you look good you'll feel good but I do look good and I don't look that way to please others. The part I don't understand is the part of "who doesn't care to look good for men must be out to attract the opposite sex" That part makes no sense. I never said I didn't care if I looked good or not, I simply pointed out that # 1 - it isn't my main goal when I get on the bike (oh my goodness this might mess up my hair) and # 2 because I look as good as I can naturally I do so, again, for myself and not for the sole purpose of attracting a man.

I am quite happy with the men I date, or don't date as it suits my life for ME not to fit into some societal image of what a woman should be.

This is 2009 and I cannot fathom why we still all buy into everything is done for a man, to attract a man, to get a man, to keep a man, or that it is somehow unacceptable to be perfectly happy and confident without one.

How Funny This Is

Come on people. Who cares. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If it is all relevant than it is all the same. Ride like the wind and enjoy the freedom. Safety first and foremost.

First off I wasn't bitching, I was stating my opinion period. How dare you tell me I have no right to state that!

As women riders we should be more concerned with how we ride and safety issues then how good we look. It isn't so much that some of you care so much about what you look like, that's fine, but what I object to is the common thread to looking good is "It's sexy" (implying it's for the men's benefit and not ours) or "Men love how it looks"

Again why do some of you care so damn much about what men think? I don't and trust me I am no beauty, not at all, never have been. But I attract men due to my personality, my laughter, my intelligence.

And I find the constant barrage of "helmet hair" to be equally as stupid and childish

If you want to look good, that's fine, great, more power to you. But what's wrong with wanting to look good for yourself and not for men????

You know , we are women and part of being women is the desire to look good. Why can we not ride bikes and look decent at the same time? That is what separates us from the men. If you are secure in the way that you look after you get off the bike then more power to you. There are some of us that would like a few helpful hints. As I recall, there is a helmet hair section here. If you can't stand to read it, again don't open the site. And don't bitch at us who do!

I am going to get off this site and list now. I simply cannot stomach one more "sexy" "look good for the men" etc etc posts. I watched another thread a few weeks back and I have to agree with whoever that was. It's a real shame when the way you look is more important then safety or performance issues as they relate to MOTORCYCLES.
