Question about Outer Banks, NC

by Manne
(Georgia)

I am a hard of hearing lady who has been riding for about 3-4 years (2008 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic). And my husband and brother-in law(both hearing) have planned to ride out to Outer Banks, NC from Middle Georgia sometimes in Sept. 2011, and they asked me to join them. So I decided to ride with them. It will be my first time on a very long trip (6 days). Has anyone ridden on Outer Banks, NC before? If you have, is there anything I need to be more aware about riding on the long islands? I am really excited about riding with the 2 guys, but I am kinda uneasy for I am a flower sniffer. The guys are aggressive, but they always slow down whenever I ride with them. No problem. I really appreciate your advice.

Riding the outer banks
by: Anonymous

First off Highyway 12 won't be open for at least 40 days thanks to Hurricane Irene. On oarts of the outer banks it is common for water to over wash the roads which can lead to salt water puddles. Avoid the peak traffic hours and you will have a very enjoyable ride! Make sure you are rested before starting down Highway 12. Pull-offs are uncommon and the shoulders of the road are soft sand, not condusive to motorcycles! Jenettes Pier is a good plae to stop north of huh 12. The ride to Rodanthe will take about 30 minutes and another 30 or so to Avon. Hatteras, and the ferry to Ocracoke, is about 30 minutes past that. The Salvo Day Use Area and Hatteras Lighthouse are great places to stop for a walk. Enjoy and see you on the road!!

Outerbanks
by: Yvonne - NC

My husband and I had planned to go to the Outerbanks this weekend, but, Irene had other plans. My husband sometimes wants to be sort of aggressive riding, but, I just go my speed and he can wait for me. I've only been riding a little over a year. I retired in Sept 2010, we've put on about 5000 miles since then, as you can see I'm enjoying my retirement. Just enjoy yourself and be safe. Who knows, maybe I'll see you there.
