Knitted Skull Caps
by Robin C
My hair is baby fine and slightly wavy, but once mashed by a helmet there is nothing short of a shower to revive it! I always wear a skull cap or bandanna, and leave it on until I get home, but if I want to glam up my look I wear one of my hand-knitted skull caps. My girlfriend suggested the idea, and being a compulsive knitter and yarn addict, I searched thru my stash and used ribbon yarns to create beautiful, girly skull caps. I simply knit a short "beanie" hat in the round using large needles for a slightly open look, leave a 2-3" opening in the back that I lace with leather to keep it from coming off with the helmet. I look for interesting beads in the jewelry section of craft stores and string a couple of them on the bottom of the leather laces just for fun. I get so many compliments on these, and almost everyone asks where I buy them. I have also made them from wool in a tighter knit for those early spring / late fall rides...it gets awful cold here in Michigan!
