Gear - Helmets and Jackets

by Jeanine
(Dayton, OH)

I am a beginner rider and set to take the basic rider course in a few weeks. As I look at the plethora of jackets and helmets online, I am a bit overwhelmed. I'd like some input on preferred brands and styles. I am looking to get a cruiser bike, I envision mostly summer riding. It appears that a textile jacket would be a suitable option?

Try everything on. I found a jacket that I loved online. It seemed to fit well without the liner, but with the liner, I'm in trouble. I had forgotten that my shoulders are a little wider than most women's. It also didn't have adequate hip room. I made the mistake of not returning it right away thinking I would loose some winter weight, so it sits in my closet. My aunt bought me a "pawn shop special" (leather biker jacket) and that works well. You'd be surprised how cool it gets when you ride. I have yet to be overheated and I've ridden in mid 90* weather.

Try Everything On
by: Mel

Hi- I understand your sensation of being overwhelmed by all the gear. I just got outfitted. It took about 2 weeks, I visited several shops in my city and **tried on every brand I could find**.

A few other tips:

-Be honest with the sales rep about how things feel- if they know their product they can be an incredible help. Each brand fits in different ways.

-Make a commitment to the time- don't expect to whip in and get a jacket. I have easily clocked 15 hours+

-Find a store that carries women's gear. I have big thighs- after trying on I swear, 13 pants, we found one with mesh panels that are PERFECT.

Thanks

Thanks for the input-- That helps me in knowing I should be OK forgoing the leather as long as it's quality armor and good fit.

Brands

I have a little of everything Joe Rocket, Power Trip, First Gear, Triumph, and I think I take a different size in every brand so the most important thing is FIT. I have a mesh jacket that I was wearing when I had my accident it saved my shoulder because I had the armor in place and the jacket fit properly, the place on the jacket got shredded but my shoulder didn't even get scratched. I still wear it today I sew so I put a green leather 4 leaf clover on as a patch and new armor, it's made by First Gear.
