Winter Storage, do you need to put in garage?

by gina
(portland, OR)

This will be my first winter as a motorcycle owner,so how should I store my motorcycle? My apartments does not have enclosed garage, so I would have to find space to rent or will a cover for motorcycle work? I live in Oregon so it gets cold, wet & rainy weather, I want to do what would be best to keep the bike running well. What steps should take before putting in storage?

Cold storage does not really hurt a bike. Inside is always better. Yes put some plastic on the floor under your bike. Put in some cheap oil and filter. Run till hot first though. After that pull the battery and yes put on wood but not concrete. And trickle charge it about once a month for about 1/2 hour. Also put baggies around the muffler ends and seal tight with elastic bands...this stops the rust from growing inside the muffler out....

Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up.

If you can you should store it somewhere inside that is dry; a friend's garage, storage shed, or storage unit. Try not to park it on the cement but lay down a piece of outdoor carpet or plywood and park it on top. You do not want to park it on concrete as the humidity will travel through the metal. Take out the battery; place the battery on a trickle charger if you have one. Ensure that you do not store the battery on concrete; place the battery on a two by four or some other piece of wood, somewhere inside if you can. (Be careful where you store it as it has acid in it.) You will want to charge the battery before you ride in the spring if you do not have the battery on a trickle charger. You also want to go to the auto parts store or motorcycle shop and purchase an additive for your gas. Tell them you are storing it for the winter and they will guide you to the proper additive. Put the additive in the gas and run it for a little while. (Before you take the battery out that is.) You want your gas tank to be as full as possible when you store it. Hope this helps. Good luck and wonderful journeys on your steel horse.
